Book Review: Milk and Honey

Mar 11, 2017

Confession time: The last time I fully read a poetry book was in elementary school. So I'm no expert in poetry, but I've explored its world as an adult and my mind has opened in amazing ways. milk and honey by Rupi Kaur is literally seen ALL OVER the internet. It seemed mandatory that I read it. And so I have! If you're that one person who has yet to read milk and honey, hopefully my review will ease you into giving it a try. Here's a short summary from the book itself:

"milk and honey is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. It is about the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. It is split into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose, deals with a different pain, heals a different heartache. milk and honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look."

Pros: This novel is brilliant. From the very first poem to the last I was struck with immense emotion, both miserable and euphoric. I cried. I laughed. These are the kinds of emotions you WANT to feel when you're reading poetry. I was miserable in the best sense because Kaur's poetry is so honest. It exposed my darkest feelings and boosted my confidence at the same time. How is that possible? Art. Kaur is great at creating it in just a few words (seriously, her poems are really short). The illustrations/doodles are seemingly simple as well, but they prove to be just as powerful as her words. By the end of this novel, I definitely felt an overwhelming sense of power and joy.

Cons: I truly have no critique to this. None. The cover was prone to fingerprints? I'd say it's a bit gender-exclusive, but I can't really say that. This is Kaur's journey and experience, so she has every right to write it HER way.

Overall: milk and honey is all over the internet for a reason. It's a must-read for anyone at any age. It's therapeutic, it's exposing, it's masterful, it's art. I guarantee (coming from someone who loves herself) that you will love yourself even MORE after reading this. And it all comes from a series of short poems. How could you not read milk and honey?

Personal Rating Score: 5/5
